Jair Bolsonaro detained after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
